1st Printing. Signed. 191 pages. Retrospective collection of "constructed" photographs. One of the best books on the art and achievement of James Casebere. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The production values are outstanding in every respect, as befits Italian publishing, the best in the world along with Japan's. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper by Charta in Milan, Italy to the highest standards. In pictorial DJ with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents, in an austerely elegant collectible format, James Casebere's "The Spatial Uncanny". Mysterious and evocative spaces that are imaginative studies in light and space. One thinks of these quiet spaces as otherworldly, as the exact opposite of our noisy world. James Casebere's artistic practice is simple enough: He has devoted his career to constructing meticulous, small-scale architectural models that are then lit and photographed in his studio. Alas, they open themselves up as such - with the artist's apparent approval - to all kinds of "interpretation". Because it is not possible for art critics and commentators to leave a work of art alone, to experience pleasure in the sensuous and beguiling beauty of the work. Art critics need a raison d'etre, namely analytical seriousness; otherwise there would be no need for them at all - there isn't - the way there is, by contrast, for literary critics (because great literature simply has too much on its mind that must be "deconstructed", and not in the Derridean sense). Still, hermeneutics rules and remains unchallenged in contemporary art criticism, which to be fair, NO ONE reads. James Casebere's art is immersive and can be enjoyed for its sheer beauty: The more you take the time to look at them, the deeper your pleasure. An absolute "must-have" title for James Casebere collectors. This copy is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the title page by James Casebere. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a contemporary art book classic. This is one of very few such title-page signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. A rare signed copy thus. Lavishly illustrated with color plates. One of the most brilliant artists of our time. A fine copy. ISBN 8881583151.…
