Item description from seller

First edition, first printing. Hardback. Original publisher's cloth. Collation: xi, 165 pp. Octavo (8vo). Issued without a dust jacket. Elite Theological Association & Dual-Manuscript Archive: Opposite the title page, the front free endpaper bears the author's elegant presentation inscription written in a classic Victorian long-s script: "Hartwell D. Grissell, Esquire, with the Author's sincere Regards. Lyminge, Dec. 21st, 1894." Hartwell de la Garde Grissell was a prominent Oxford Tractarian convert who served as a Papal Chamberlain to three successive Popes. Affixed neatly within the preliminary leaves are two lengthy, highly significant autograph letters signed (ALS) from the author, Canon Robert C. Jenkins, to Grissell, charting the complete history of the book from its inception to its release. (Note: Manuscript text provided below is transcribed as comprehensive extended extracts of the core historical content).1. The Inception Letter (Dated 18 November 1886 - Lyminge, Hythe): Written eight years prior to publication, Jenkins discusses an invitation to Oxford and reveals the research that would spark this monograph: "I have been reading lately with immense interest the documents connected with the legation to China of the Cardinal de Tournon, and the internecine war carried on between the Jesuits and the Cardinal and his Franciscan friends. I think that there is much to be said on both sides. Perhaps I may, some day, take it up with a judicial mind."2. The Publication Letter (Dated late 1894 - Lyminge Rectory): Sent alongside the gift of the newly printed book, this letter serves as a sharp, back-stage critique of the late-Victorian English Catholic hierarchy following the death of Cardinal Manning: "My long and affectionate friendship with Cardinal Manning enables me to corroborate all you say about his large-hearted views. It is a sad pity that Card. Vaughan has so far departed from the traditions of his predecessor and has been stirring up conflict where. we have such imperative calls to unity."Significant Library Provenance: Features the historic, inked oval/egg-shaped library stamp of St. Beuno's College Library (North Wales) to the preliminary leaves, bearing the central designation "Bellarmine" (signifying the college's historic St. Robert Bellarmine collection) and "Library" to the lower curve. St. Beuno's is celebrated as the historic Jesuit theologate where the poet Gerard Manley Hopkins studied and composed his finest works.Condition Report: A solid, secure, and entirely sound handled copy in an honest Very Good condition. Cloth shows some expected rubbing to the corner tips and spine ends, with one minor bump to the rear cover fore-edge. Gilt spine titles remain readable. Internally tightly bound; features the noted historic library stamps and some typical, natural age-browning to the preliminary leaves, but pages remain clean and entirely free from modern ink annotations. Both manuscript letters remain entirely dark, crisp, and fully legible. An unparalleled, museum-grade archival survival of Anglo-Catholic historiography. Please study the numerous detailed photographs provided to verify condition. Free UK postal delivery included.

Description de la boutique

I have collected books most of my life. My collection has reduced now to about 4,000 items. I list a few more as time goes by! It is difficult sometimes to allow old friends to move on. Of course, they can find fresh enthusiasm from their new owners. No matter how many items you handle, there's always excitement and interest. It is vital however that my items are described accurately and I would hope to offer good value. If you see something that you feel is 'too high' for your pocket, don't hesitate to make me an offer. I try to keep the postage costs down, and within the United Kingdom this will be free. Posting abroad will be competitive, and often I will not ask for additional amounts if this is viable. But weight of items is the deciding factor. I will add images to my descriptions, and I hope that the combination will help you to decide. Regardless, always double check or take time to contact me for further information, or merely just to clarify a point. Ask for more images. If I can reduce anything I will do so. If you purchase more than one item, then offering a decent discount is likely. If items are not as described or you have a valid problem with any item, then I am happy to make a full or partial refund. This will be in line with all Statutory guidelines e.g returning the book in the condition it was delivered, and do let me know as quickly as possible. If damage has occurred then try to provide images. Ring me on 01352-810931
