A propos de cet article

"THIS WAS A WAR OF IDEALS—AND THE WRONG ONES NEARLY—" INSCRIBED FIRST EDITION. A work of speculative fiction, The Last Nazi dramatises the final days of the Nazi regime. The book opens with a newspaper clipping, "BERLIN CAPTURED BY AMERICAN EXPEDITIONARY FORCE" dated April 3, 1945. That date would turn out to be within a month of the date of Berlin’s official surrender on May 2, 1945, though of course to the Soviet forces. Further press snippets cast doubt on what is really happening in Berlin, especially concerning the status of 'Mr. Big'—Hitler. "Mr. President, tell us just where the Little Dictator might be. Mussolini, the baloney puppet, is imprisoned by the British, in Rome; the Jap Sun God was executed by the Russians, but—WHERE IS HITLER?" The diary of an American professor called Frank Grayson who is summoned to Germany to assist his friend Ralph in an unknown task. It turns out that all German leaders have been captured apart from Hitler (though Goering has been murdered, “found in the back of a barber shop, cut up like paper, in shreds). Grayson is tasked with helping to root out the last of Nazi energies, collected now into a group of youths led seemingly by a ‘Schirmer’ (or Otto, or 'The General'). At its best points of clarity, the plot is difficult to follow. At some point Grayson goes missing. He may or may not be rescued. (This is not a point of suspense to sell the book, I really have no idea). In any case, the book is dedicated "To the few 'Professor Graysons' in the world, who brave relentless Nazi terrors—and seldom return." Whitman served in Burma and India during WWII; he was only 19 in 1943 when this book was published. In a newspaper article about two short plays of his being published by the Exposition Press, New York in 1951, he says of The Last Nazi that "unfortunately very few people bought the book." Extremely uncommon; WorldCat identifies only five library copies in the US. Red cloth boards with black lettering, dust jacket. BOOK: Boards square, a little darkened and textured to spine; top-edge dark, fore edge a little toned, contents unmarked; binding a little tender at places throughout the text, printed in a ‘film-script’ style. Inscribed by author in Spanish to title page, "To my 'amiga', [?] Alice / from Russell Whitman [?]. DJ: Dust jacket with areas of loss to head of spine and to bottom left corner of front cover, darkened to spine, bold design of a crumbling city with a skull and bones exuding red blood leaking over a swastika, labelled ‘Germany in the Future’ presents very well. Based on the lack of other copies this book is possibly a kind of proof. Very rare in any case. …
