A propos de cet article

First edition of the campaign biography of Rutherford B. Hayes, published in the year of the disputed 1876 presidential election that carried him to the White House. Octavo, original decorative red cloth stamped in gilt, with a gilt portrait of Hayes to the spine and his name in gilt to the front cover, and tissue-guarded frontispiece. Signed by Rutherford B. Hayes on the title page, “R.B. Hayes Spiegel Grove 1876" and inscribed by him on the front free endpaper, “To the Ohio Commandery of the Loyal Legion, 30 Sep 1885. R.B. Hayes.” Rutherford B. Hayes’s own copy, he presented the volume to the Ohio Commandery of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States in 1885, and it bears the Commandery’s presentation bookplate recording the gift. Hayes (1822-1893), a Civil War general and governor of Ohio, won the presidency in one of the most disputed elections in American history and served as the nineteenth President of the United States from 1877 to 1881. Spiegel Grove was his estate at Fremont, Ohio. In very good condition, bookplate to the second free endpaper. An exceptional presidential association copy, being Hayes’s own copy of his 1876 campaign biography. Life and Public Services of Gov. Rutherford B. Hayes was written by Russell H. Conwell (1843-1925) as a campaign biography for the presidential election of 1876. Conwell, a lawyer, journalist, and Baptist minister, would later become famous for his inspirational lecture ?Acres of Diamonds? and as the founder of Temple University in Philadelphia. The election of 1876, pitting Hayes against Samuel J. Tilden, remains among the most contentious in American history, with disputed returns from several states leaving the outcome unresolved for months until an electoral commission awarded the presidency to Hayes, an arrangement remembered as the Compromise of 1877. …
