First South African edition, first printing, inscribed by the author on the half-title, "For Patrick Halliday, Best wishes - Mandela 16.6.05". Halliday, a Cape Town wine merchant, was friends with Mandela's secretary in Cape Town, Steven Govender. Mandela's internationally acclaimed autobiography chronicles his undercover activities, imprisonment for treason and quarter-century behind bars, his rise to international icon, the end of apartheid, and his landslide victory to become South Africa's first black President. The UK, US, and South African editions were published near-simultaneously. Octavo. Original black boards, titles to spine in gilt, map of South Africa endpapers. With dust jacket. Slight split at foot of front joint, minor spotting to endpapers and edges; unclipped jacket with very slight creasing at extremities: a very good copy in very good jacket.
