Item description from seller

Rare typed letter signed by the 36th President of the United States to the Governor of Texas. Quarto, one page on The White House letterhead, dated July 29 1964, the letter reads, 'Dear Governor Connally: Today I have wired the Presidents of leading state universities of the nation as follows: 'A number of state universities are engaged in important studies of the development of their states and regions over the next twenty years or so. I am deeply interested in these studies and to further them in any way I can, I am inviting the Presidents of leading state universities throughout the United States to the White House on August 13, 1964 at 1 p.m.' I am pleased to note that the group includes four universities in your state. Of course I know that you share my interest in these studies. If you have any suggestions as to how we here in Washington -- in addition to this conference -- might further the studies, please do not fail to write me. With personal regards, Sincerely, "Lyndon B. Johnson." Honorable John B. Connally Governor of Texas Austin, Texas.' The recipient, Governor John B. Connally met and befriended Lyndon Johnson in 1936 at the University of Texas at Austin, who helped him get a job at the University library and who received help in return with his 1937 bid for Congress. After the Second World War, Connally served as an aide to Senator Lyndon B. Johnson, and when Johnson became Vice President in 1961, President John F. Kennedy was convinced to appoint Connally to the position of United States Secretary of the Navy. In 1961, Connally left the Kennedy Administration in run for Governor of Texas and won, becoming the 39th governor of Texas. When Kennedy was assassinated, Connally was riding in the presidential limousine and was seriously wounded. This letter is dated the year after the assassination and Johnson's swearing in as President. In near fine condition with a small loss to the top edge. An excellent association. Lyndon Baines Johnson was an American politician who served as the 36th President of the United States from 1963 to 1969, assuming the office after serving as the 37th Vice President of the United States under President John F. Kennedy from 1961 to 1963. A Democrat from Texas, he previously served as a United States Representative from 1937 to 1949 and then as a United States Senator from 1949 to 1961. He spent six years as Senate Majority Leader, two as Senate Minority Leader, and two more as Senate Majority Whip.
