First impression of the first trade edition, published in the UK by Fulcrum Press. There was also a signed limited edition of just 100 copies. Printed by Villiers Publications Ltd, London for Fulcrum Press. ***This copy has been inscribed by the author to the scholar and civil servant Sir Charles Tennyson, grandson of Alfred Lord Tennyson. ***A near fine copy in black cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine. The gilt is still beautifully bright, having been protected by the dustwrapper. The boards are clean and unmarked. No bumps or creases. Internally the book is also near fine, with no inscriptions other than the author's presentation on the front free endpaper (please see scans). Pages very clean with no tears or creases. Spine tight. ***In a very good illustrated dustwrapper, which has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of 25/-. The dustwrapper is complete, with just some light creasing and rubbing at the edges. The all white dustwrapper has a small mark on the back panel, but is otherwise unblemished. No serious creases or tears (please see scans). ***220mm x 148mm. 48 pages. ***'The following poem was an unexpected result of the months I spent in Oxford in 1968 and 1969, as a Visiting Fellow of All Souls College. My gratitude to the College for the freedom it gave me, and for its most generous hospitality, goes beyond anything I can say in the present connection. But I must thank the Warden particularly, for the interest he too in the poem, and for his comments on an earlier version. My use of the five-lined stanza was suggested by Shelley's in "Peter Bell the Third", so much more lively and flexible than Wordsworth's in the original "Peter". F.T.P. October, 1969. (Taken from the author's note at the fore) ***'Frank Templeton Prince (13 Sep 1912 - 7 Aug 2003) was a British poet and academic, known generally for his best-known poem "Soldiers Bathing", written during the Second World War in 1942, which has been frequently included in anthologies. He was born in Kimberley, South Africa. His father Henry (Harry) Prince (formerly Prinz) was from the East End of London, of Dutch-Jewish descent, while his mother was Scottish. He was educated at the Christian Brothers College in Kimberley, then Balliol College, Oxford. Prince's early work drew praise from T.S. Eliot, who was then editor at Faber and Faber. Eliot published some of his poetry in The Criterion before publishing Prince's first book "Poems" in 1938. In work such as the Afterword on Rupert Brooke his interest in the metrical ideas of Robert Bridges is evident. F. T. Prince died in Southampton in 2003. (Wiki) ***'Sir Charles Bruce Locker Tennyson CMG (8 Nov 1879 - 22 Jun 1977) was a grandson of the poet Alfred Lord Tennyson, a civil servant, an industrialist, and an academic of his grandfather. Tennyson was the son of the Hon. Lionel Tennyson and his wife Eleanor Bertha Mary, daughter of Frederick Locker. His father was the younger son of Alfred, Lord Tennyson. He was educated at Eton College and King's College, Cambridge, where he gained a first in Part I of the Law Tripos and was a Whewell Scholar in 1903. In 1909, he married Ivy Gladys OBE (née Pretious). They had three sons, two of whom were killed during the Second World War. He was awarded CMG in the 1915 New Year Honours and knighted in 1945.' Conditions d'expédition
For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging materials; any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only; for the UK, our standard rate is for first class, and the priority rate includes tracked (signed for) delivery; for International sales, our standard rate is for Airmail delivery, and the priority rate is for tracked (International signed for) delivery. We would prefer that you choose the priority rate (tracked option) for higher value books of say £50 or more. Please note that we will always reduce shipping fees where appropriate e.g. for smaller (lighter) books when we accept your order. For heavier books and sets etc. we will often 'soak up' the extra cost, but on occasion, we may need to charge more than the quoted shipping fee. However, customers will always have the option to either accept or decline the revised order amount. We will also reduce the overall shipping fee for multiple orders. We will endeavour to ship all books within two business days of receiving your order.
