"F. O. Matthiessen, Christian Socialist as Critic" by Frederick C. Stern is a brilliant examination of the famous literary scholar's work. The book was published by the University of North Carolina in 1981. This is the First Edition, and is inscribed and signed by the author on the title page. F. O. Matthiessen was a major literary scholar , specializing in mid 19th century American literature. He was the main driving force that established the concept of the American Renaissance, through his ground-breaking work on Emerson, Thoreau, Melville, Whitman and Nathaniel Hawthorne. This was presented in his book, "American Renaissance: Art and Expression in the Age of Emerson and Whitman" (1941). He also wrote important work on T. S. Eliot, Alice James, Henry James, Henry James Sr., William James, Sarah Orne Jewett, and Sinclair Lewis. The following is an excerpt from the jacket write-up, which should indicate the aim of this book : "F. O. Matthiessen was a major literary critic and a distinguished teacher from 1930 to 1950. Despite his premature death, his extraordinary output of critical works constitutes a very important part of the development of twentieth-century American literary scholarship and criticism. In this study Frederick Stern argues with insight and compassion that Matthiessen was able to synthesize opposing forces in his ideas and in his life and to make them a means for understanding the art of literature. "Although Matthiessen advocated formalism in literature and was involved with the principles of New Criticism, his deep appreciation of injustice and tragedy in human life enabled him to respect the work of as limited a stylist as Theodore Dreiser. He had a deep Christian concern for humankind, but it was his concern for 'democratic man' that led him to embrace socialism. Although he thought of himself as a socialist without a party, he wrote that the 'second of the two great commandments, to love thy neighbor as thyself, seems to me an imperative to social action . CONDITION -- BOOK : GOOD PLUS -- JACKET : GOOD PLUS -- This is a previously owned book which remains clean and presentable, with the following imperfections and particulars noted :: EXTERIOR : A small dent to the top edge of the front board, else crisp, clean and attractive. Text-block edges are slightly weathered, else clean and free of marking. BINDING : Solid - tight INTERIOR : A purchase date and initial letter R are inked on the front free end-paper; a couple of small, light tea-stains display at edges on same (hence the good only grade). The author inscribed and signed the book on the title page in ink: ( "To Laydia, affectionately Fred" ). Else the interior is clean and free of marking. DUST-JACKET : A tear at the head of the spine panel was repaired with clear tape applied to the reverse; surface rub is moderate; spine panel is faded; surface abrasion is moderate. We process most orders in 1 to 3 business days and ship via the US Postal Service, via First Class International Mail. Shipping costs are based on books weighing 2.2 LB, or 1 KG. If your book order is heavy or oversized (the backage beign over 4 lb) it will have to ship by International Priority Mail for an increased price. We may contact you to let you know extra shipping is required.
