A propos de cet article

First edition, inscribed twice. The first inscription, dated to the year of publication, is from Bray: "To her beloved mother. as a mark of the duty and affection of its author". In 1831, Bray's mother, Ann Kempe, re-inscribed the book to the poet Robert Southey, explaining that her daughter had been unable to find another copy to send him. Anna Eliza Bray (1790-1883) published the Memoirs in memory of her first husband. Alongside preserving Stothard's writing, Bray describes their devotion to one another and her profound sorrow at his untimely death and that of their infant daughter, Blanch. A contemporary annotation, possibly added by a member of Southey's household, observes that Bray was "not five and twenty years old when these calamities occurred". Bray's experiences may have resonated with Southey, who lost four children before they reached adulthood. A second contemporary annotation in the same hand compares Bray's writing with a passage from Southey's 1825 poem A Tale of Paraguay that reflects on the loss of a young child. Bray sent Southey several books during their correspondence. In 1830, he received her novels, Fitz of Fitz-Ford and The Talba, which he described as "abundantly interesting as to character, situations, and events" (quoted in Bray, 1884, p. 227). Bray dedicated her 1834 historical romance Warleigh to Southey and later published a selection of their correspondence as A Description of the Part of Devonshire Bordering on the Tamar and the Tavy. Patterned cotton bindings were crafted by women from the Southey and Coleridge families when they lived together at Greta Hall, the Lake District house rented by Robert Southey from 1804 to 1843. Individuals including Edith May Southey and Sara Coleridge recycled scraps from dressmaking to create book covers, turning "the library space into a spectacle of feminine creativity" (Williams, p. 360). Catalogue of the Valuable Library of the Late Robert Southey, 1844, p. 137, no. 2748. Anna Eliza Bray, Autobiography of Anna Eliza Bray, edited by John A. Kempe, 1884; Helen Williams, "Craftivism and Cottonian Bindings: 'The Handiwork of Greta Hall'", Criticism, vol. 64, No. 3/4, Summer/Fall 2022. Octavo (234 x 147 mm), pp. viii, 497, [1], 4. Engraved portrait frontispiece, engraved plate, illustrations to text, errata slip bound after frontmatter, publisher's advertisements bound at end. Rebacked with original spine laid down, front flyleaf re-mounted. Contemporary "Cottonian" binding of white textile printed with blue and pink pattern over boards, white paper spine label, fore edge and lower edge untrimmed. With 20th-century bookplate of British barrister, politician, and supporter of women's rights Henry Devenish Harben (1874-1967). Spine toned, darkened areas to covers, cotton worn at edges, plates damp-stained and a little foxed: a very good copy.…
