Item description from seller

First of this edition (NAP). Signed and inscribed on the blank verso side of the half-title page by the translator, Arvid Paulson. The inscription reads :'To __ Samuel W. Moore-- with the gratitude of Arvid Paulson, 11 August 1966.' Both the book and the dust jacket are in nice condition. You can see the covers of the book in the photos. They are mostly clean, only a few light spots on the front cover. The black lettering on the spine is nicely bright. The bottom edge of the spine has a thin crinkle. The cover edges are in excellent shape, no rubbing. The same goes for the four cover corners. There's one little bump, hardly a bump, just above the front bottom edge. The page edges look very clean. The spine is straight and the book is very solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. The inside covers and end papers are black. They look very good, very clean. The pages look very clean as well. Scrolling through, I'm not finding any instances of soiling. I'm not finding any creasing. There are no markings. No attachments of any kind. And with the exception of the translator's signed inscription, no one has written their name or anything else anywhere. I have always had the dust jacket in a fitted protective cover. The jacket is in very solid shape. There is a small scuff at the bottom edge of the spine. There is a small white spot on the rear cover. And there are some dark areas on the white part of the rear cover. The flaps are in very nice shape. There is a tiny crease just above the tip of the front bottom corner. The jacket is NOT price-clipped, not clipped at all. From the jacket: 'The translator, Arvid Paulson, has translated more works from the Scandinavian languages than anyone heretofore; among these, works by Ibsen, Bjornson, Selma Lagerlof, Vilhelm Moberg, Prince William of Sweden, and others. In 1964 the Royal Swedish Academy of Letters awarded Paulson its gold medal, the first time it has been given for translations of Swedish into a foreign language.' From Wikipedia: 'The People of Hemso is an 1887 novel by August Strindberg about the life of people of the island Hemsö in the Stockholm archipelago. Hemsö is a fictional island, but it is based on Kymmendo where Strindberg had spent time in his youth. Strindberg wrote the book to combat his homesickness while living abroad in Germany and France. Written during a difficult period in exile from Sweden, the novel paradoxically has a strong sense of place, and is a feat of straightforward folksy storytelling. Mrs. Anna Eva Flod, a widow of some means, hires Johannes Edvard Carlsson to run the farm on the island. As a newcomer and a landlubber among sailors and fishermen, Carlsson is implicitly distrusted by the locals as they try to discern whether he is a slippery confidence trickster preying on the lonely widow, or an honest, hard-working man revitalizing the neglected farm. The 1944 film The People of Hemso was adapted from the novel. In 1955, a movie based on the novel was shown; it marked the first film appearance of the actress Daliah Lavi. In 1966, a TV series based on the novel was produced.'.

Many of the books I will be selling can accurately be described as ranging from somewhat rare to very rare. In some cases there won't be another copy for sale anywhere on the Internet. There doesn't seem much point, for you or me, in offering something that so many others are already offering. Subject matter will range very widely, creating the possibility for people with very different interests to find something that excites them. As regards pricing, my primary goal is to sell the book. Most often I would expect my book to be the least expensive option on the Internet taking into account an appropriate comparison(what is the condition, is the dust jacket present, is the book signed, is it a first printing, etc.). More important than selling the book I want to make sure that you know, as much as is possible, exactly what you are getting. To that end, you'll notice that my descriptions of condition tend to be lengthy, and that there will always be photographs to help you draw your own conclusions. Please feel free to contact me with any questions about a given book. As regards international shipping, the first class or standard rates I charge are based on a package weight between 2 and 3 pounds. If the book is on the thin side there is a possibility that I can securely pack it up under 2 pounds in weight. If so, the shipping price will drop by around $11.00 or $12.00 to $26.00-27.00. Canada, which is less expensive drops to $18.00. You can contact me before purchasing a book for an estimate on the shipping cost. If you buy the book and it weighs in below 2 pounds you'll get a Reduced Shipping message and amount with the invoice and you'll see the lowered final cost before you make your payment.
