Item description from seller

242 pages. Hardcover. First edition. Text in English. [SIGNED] Initialed in black marker "AW" with an inscription (To Mary Jane with much love aw), followed by a full signature (Andy Warhol), and drawn soup can all packed on to the same half title page. The artist would vary what flavor of soup he drew to suit the reader/recipient. In this case, he doodled "Oil Soup," presumably referring to the source of the recipient's employer's wealth and location then in Houston, Texas. A stated first edition, followed by the letters "B C D E" indicating that it is a first impression of the first edition. A near fine copy with some mild soiling and a light stain to the top edge of the page block and minimal shelfwear to the edges of the boards and jacket. Else, the jacket is bright and unblemished with an unclipped price. The binding is tight, the interior (aside from the aforementioned inscription, signature, and drawing) is clean and unmarked. The previous owner was employed by the Houston art collectors and philanthropists John and Dominique de Menil. She recounts an event at Houston's University of St. Thomas where Warhol was signing books accompanied by Factory cohort and celebrity Viva. According to the previous owner, he insisted that Viva entertain the crowd in attendance by telling them a story. "Tell them the story of the birth of baby Jesus," she remembers him saying. Viva proceeded to do just that. An almost perfect condition copy of a seminal landmark book in the history of 20th century art, inscribed by arguably one of its most provocative and influential artists, and personalized and linked to the oil town that was possibly more supportive and receptive to his radical ideas than most.
