A propos de cet article

First edition, signed and numbered in the author's hand. No. 5 of 125 copies. In a few days, this beautiful book will be one hundred years old. W. H. Davis was a Welsh poet who lived as a hobo in Britain and America, during the late 1800s, traveling highways and railroads. He lost a leg after being crushed beneath a train; availed himself of the boodle system paying jailers to allow him to spend the winter in prison, having committed no crime; and finally became one of the favored poets of his time, after George Bernard Shaw took an interest in his work and wrote a preface for Davis Autobiography of a Supertramp . Incredible, sad, and ultimately rewarding story. The poems herein, have a touch of Edward Gorey s dark humor, and Emily Bronte s heart-wrenching proximity to death. Hardcover, 1925, without dust-jacket. green boards with tan spine, somewhat faded with time. Foxing on edges, and from paste-down to title page, then bright and clean text block. Foxing again at rear endpapers. Very good condition. Illustrated throughout with gorgeous drawings by Dora M. Batty. From the collection of publisher and poet, Kirby Congdon, who was aligned with leading figures of the San Francisco Renaissance, Black Mountain College and the Beats, and was central to the dissemination of their work, through his small presses; Interim Books, Cycle Press, and Crank Books. Chapbooks, broadsides, and pamphlets along with his legendary underground series Magazine, which ran to six issues between the 1960s and 2000s, also elevated the work of his peers, and contains the first iterations of several Charles Bukowski, Jack Micheline and Gregory Corso poems. A prodigious and widely published poet, Congdon was at the core of the literary and mimeograph revolutions of the 60s and 70s. His own poetry was published in almost every small press journal of the time, The New York Times, Christian Science Monitor, and many anthologies. He corresponded regularly with hundreds of writers in the United States, Europe and South America, forming a vast network of contemporaries. His archive of correspondence, including copies of the letters he sent, provides a deep and unique insight into the concerns, ambitions, frustrations and activities of those who ushered a new zeitgeist and a pivotal cultural transformation in the United States.
