1st Printing. Signed. 260 pages. Collection of novellas. One of Andre Aciman's finest achievements. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, particularly copies that are signed on a tipped-in page. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. Presents Andre Aciman's "Room On The Sea: Three Novellas". Novellas that have the weight and depth of full-fledged novels. They are: "The Gentleman From Peru"; "Mariana"; and the eponymous "Room On The Sea". "Hypnotic novellas about obsessional love, missed connections, and enduring regret. Deals with the heart-wrenching vicissitudes of amorous ambivalence, in Andre Aciman's inimitably nostalgic, lyric style. 'The Gentleman from Peru' tells the story of the life-changing encounter of a group of friends with an enigmatic solitary guest in a hotel on the Amalfi Coast. 'Room On The Sea' is a dialogue between a man and a woman, who meet on jury duty and embark on a complex relationship. 'Mariana' is a modern re-telling of the famous seventeenth-century novel about a love affair between a nun and a swashbuckling aristocrat. No one writes about the ups and downs, the yes and no, of contemporary love like Aciman" (Publisher's blurb). Vladimir Nabokov once famously said that "Lolita" was not an erotic - much less pornographic - novel at all. He wrote it in order to revive the serious romantic novel, which nearly perished with our nihilistic postmodernist time. Andre Aciman is our only serious novelist of this "romance" novel today; the rest are hacks. An absolute "must-have" title for Andre Aciman collectors. This copy is magnificently signed in blue ink-pen on the title page by Andre Aciman. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page, as many copies available online are. This title is a great collection. This is one of very few such title-page signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing (American) still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. A scarce signed copy thus. Andre Aciman's "Call Me By Your Name" is regarded as a classic by Colm Toibin. One of the greatest writers of our time. A fine copy. Three hypnotic novellas about obsessional love, missed connections, and enduring regret by the bestselling author of Call Me by Your Name.
The short fictions in Room on the Sea deal with the heart-wrenching vicissitudes of amorous ambivalence, in André Aciman's inimitably nostalgic, lyric style.
"The Gentleman from Peru" tells the story of the life-changing encounter of a group of friends with an enigmatic solitary guest in a hotel on the Amalfi Coast. "Room on the Sea" is a dialogue between a man and a woman who meet on jury duty and embark on a complex relationship. "Mariana" is a modern retelling of a famous seventeenth-century novel about a love affair between a nun and a swashbuckling, unreliable aristocrat.
No one writes about the ups and downs, the yeses and nos, of contemporary love like Aciman. As The Times (London) writes: "You don't so much read André Aciman's novels as tumble breathlessly into them."
