A propos de cet article

First edition in book form. Presentation copy inscribed by the author to President Millard Fillmore. 3 folding maps, folding plan, and 7 plates. 176pp (misnumbered 166). 8vo. "Both Graff and Howes note that although the title page states 'Second Edition' the above is the first edition in book form, the work having appeared previously only in a periodical . Edwin Johnson's competence as an engineer may be gauged by the fact that he subsequently became engineer-in-chief to the directors of the Northern Pacific Railroad Company" (Wagner-Camp). The work gives a detailed account of the western country; proposed route; character of the country; mountain passes; climate; soil; Upper Missouri country; Saskatchewan nad Clark's River Valley; Whitney's Route; South Pass Route; Colorado Valley; the Sierra; Route from San Francisco to the Walker and Tejon Pass; connection of California with Oregon and Washington; Expedition from San Francisco to meet Capt. Beale; Capt. Walker's Account; Aubrey's exploration from Tejon Pass to Alburquerque, etc. Wheat extolls the virtues of the folding map: "This is in many ways an extraordinary map. It has the routes of Lewis and Clark, Fremont and Emory well drawn, and its showing of the general features of the topography is also excellent, considering the time of its preparation."
