A whimsical and fantastic tale, as viewed through the prism of a magical realist lens. Its publication ignited an on-going debate on the dividing lines between freedom of expression, censorship, and religious tolerance. The book's reference to several verses that Satan allegedly tricked Muhammad into including in the Qur'an, and which were later expunged, as claimed by the controversial Arabian historian Ibn Ishaq, were the main source for the fatwa (religious edict) conferred upon Rushdie by Iran's spiritual leader, the Ayatollah Khomeini. It was officially lifted by his successors in September 1998 and the state-sanctioned reward nullified. Despite all this, Rushdie was repeatedly stabbed at the Chautauqua Institution in New York state on 12 August 1922, as he was about to deliver a lecture. He ruefully reflects on this attack which caused him to lose sight in his right eye, as well as the use of his left hand, in his 2024 memoir, Knife: Meditations After an Attempted Murder. Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. Etat de la jaquette : Very Good. 1st Edition. Hardcover with DJ. Black cloth spine, black paper over boards. Distinctive red-bordered DJ with gold lettering. Binding good and tight. On the back cover, the black cloth of the spine is faded a half tone lighter than the top half. On the DJ, there is a very slight tan tone visible on part of the white barcode. The inside of the DJ has evidence of a splash of liquid at the bottom of the spine, too -- our best guess is that the book got a slosh of tea on its corner after the DJ and mylar cover were already in place -- there is no damage visible unless you go searching around for it beneath and behind the DJ. A couple speckles on the top foreedge. No date on the title page. Copyright page dated 1989. Stated first American edition, with full number line 1 3 5 7 9 10 8 6 4 2. Hardcover. Dust Jacket Included. 1st Edition. Attractively bound in black cloth spine and gray paper-covered boards.Very clean and tight throughout. Signed "Salman Rushdie"on the title page. In a complete and striking dust jacket with the original price of $19.95. Overall, an attractive copy, signed. Laid in is 4-page pamphlet in an envelope from the Rushdie Defense Committee championing Rushdie's spirit and discussing the global impact of The Satanic Verses. The Satanic Verses is the fourth novel of the British-Indian writer Salman Rushdie. First published in September 1988, the book was inspired by the life of the Islamic prophet Muhammad. As with his previous books, Rushdie used magical realism and relied on contemporary events and people to create his characters. The title refers to the Satanic Verses, a group of Quranic verses about three pagan Meccan goddesses: All t, Al-Uzza, and Man t.[1] The part of the story that deals with the satanic verses was based on accounts from the historians al-Waqidi and al-Tabari.[1]The book was a 1988 Booker Prize finalist (losing to Peter Carey's Oscar and Lucinda), and won the 1988 Whitbread Award for novel of the year.[2] Timothy Brennan called the work "the most ambitious novel yet published to deal with the immigrant experience in Britain".The book and its perceived blasphemy motivated Islamic extremist bombings, killings, and riots and sparked a debate about censorship and religiously motivated violence. Fearing unrest, the Rajiv Gandhi government banned the importation of the book into India.[3][4] In 1989, Supreme Leader of Iran Ruhollah Khomeini declared a fatwa against Rushdie, resulting in several failed assassination attempts on the author, who was granted police protection by the UK government,[5] and attacks on connected individuals, including the Japanese translator Hitoshi Igarashi who was stabbed to death in 1991. Assassination attempts against Rushdie continued, including an attempt on his life in August 2022.
