1st Printing. Signed. 512 pages. Published in 2026. The fourth volume - thematically, not explicitly stated as such - of the author's new multi-novel sequence. The first appearance of the title in English and in the United Kingdom. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a regular first print run as a hardcover original only. Presents Karl Ove Knausgaard's "Nattskolen" in a felicitous English translation. His brilliant re-imagining of Christopher Marlowe's original classic, "Doctor Faustus". It is the latest, and perhaps the best, since Thomas Mann's "Doctor Faustus". The lengths that Western Man will go to in exchange for success: All in. But even more important, how far we are actually willing to fail in the process, the price that we willingly accept in exchange for being bought and corrupted. For Karl Ove Knausgaard, Western Man is represented at his height (from which he will inevitably fall) as a visual artist - which is in line with Marlowe's philosopher and Mann's composer. Like his predecessors, Knausgaard does not think a billionaire tech titan or a powerful politician, for example, represent a very high achievement that exacts a steep price: The capitalist-billionaire and his political counterpart "sold out", sold their souls a long time ago, and are now Evil Incarnate. Whereas success remains an elusive temptation for the still-idealistic great thinker or artist whose ultimate goal is immortality. "His most daring novel. An indelible tale about dark temptations and moral depravity" (Publisher's blurb). An absolute "must-have" title for Karl Ove Knausgaard collectors. This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed in black pen-marker on the title page by Karl Ove Knausgaard. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. Knausgaard's signature on this copy is stunning, one of the best we have ever seen after all these years of collecting copies signed by him. This title is a contemporary classic. This is one of very few such title-page signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing (American) still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: Extreme demand and time constraint have made Knausgaard resort to an Ondaatje-like swirl of a signature. Copies signed in this drastically abbreviated way have no collectible value. A rare signed copy thus. One of the greatest writers of our time. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER KARL OVE KNAUSGAARD TITLES IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 0593832809.…

Kristian Hadeland, young and ambitious, has moved to London to study photography; he knows that he and his art are destined for more. His family never understood him, and his fellow photography students bore him. But when he meets Hans, an eccentric Dutch artist, the future he yearns for is possible--as long as he is willing to sacrifice everything and stop at nothing.
Twenty-four years later, Kristian sees his dreams come to fruition when a major retrospective of his work is held in New York City. As his past catches up to him, Kristian's world begins to crumble. Success comes at a price, but is he prepared to pay it?
In a thrilling twist on Christopher Marlowe's Doctor Faustus, Karl Ove Knausgaard masterfully spins a cautionary tale about the lengths that we will go to achieve success--and how far we are willing to fall. His most daring and macabre novel yet, The School of Night is an indelible tale about dark temptations and moral depravity, and what we forget when we bargain with the devil.
