Hardcover: H 20.75cm x L 14cm. Second issue dust jacket with commentator's black and green blurbs on front and rear panels; author photo and biographical summary on rear flap. Dust jacket soiled with scuffs/nicks and light creasing at edges; short closed tear at rear panel's bottom center; front flap with usual trimmed corners but publisher's $3.50 price present at upper right; dj presented in an older Brodart protector. Light blue cloth; mild color fading evident at spine heel and bottom of front board; slender fraying to cloth at rear board's bottom edge. Darkened top edge; fore-edge lightly toned with several small light stains which fractionally affect a few leaves at margins. Light toning to endpapers; author's seven-line ink inscription "To Carson Holloman - | With all best regards | from one Southerner to | another - | John Knowles | Oxford | January 30, 1980" on front free endpaper.; interior leaves are otherwise clean. Faint cigarette odor to book which will fade with time. Binding is firm. The book's inscribee is Curtis Carson Holloman Jr. (1939-1991) who served on the English Department faculty at Northwest Mississippi Community College in Senatobia, Mississippi. The book was undoubtedly signed in conjunction with the University of Mississippi, aka Ole Miss, class "The American Novel from 1914" which was taught during the 1980 spring semester by Willie Morris who persuaded fellow authors and friends to come speak to rapt students and often rapt faculty as well. The impressive list who trekked to Oxford, Mississippi that spring included Norman Mailer, John Knowles, William Styron, Winston Groom, George Plimpton, among others.
