The author's memoir on his mother's illness, dying, and death. One of David Rieff's finest achievements. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. Presents David Rieff's "Swimming In A Sea of Death: A Son's Memoir". Perhaps the ultimate book on the denial of death, by the dying and the living. "Suffused, almost tainted, with self-questioning, but he writes so well that instead of muddying the narrative with this, he offers a clear and rare perspective on the dilemma of the loving witness - spouse, partner, sibling, child. On the one hand, he must absorb the full enormity of the disease in its every detail and implication. On the other, he must give his sick mother what she needs most, even if what she needs most is a lie that seems to contradict everything in her character, and in his. To be in such a position means being divided against oneself during one of the most intense events a life can hold. To describe this position, so unflinchingly and with such eloquence, means that David Rieff is his mother's son" (The Washington Post). The medical - the final - irony of Susan Sontag's devastating illness and then excruciating death is that there is no question her third bout with cancer (blood) was directly precipitated by the extremely aggressive treatment she sought for the previous one (uterus), which she did survive. In the end however, with cancer in particular, what doesn't kill you at first or second time does in the end, and in the most harrowing way. Susan Sontag, American intellectual par excellence, who championed and believed in The Mind (rather than the quintessentially American worship of the body) as the essence of her being, lost her mind, literally went crazy. An absolute "must-have" title for Susan Sontag and David Rieff collectors. This copy is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed in black pen-marker on the title page by David Rieff. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a contemporary classic. This is one of very few such signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. A scarce signed copy thus. One of the most brilliant American writers of our time. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER DAVID RIEFF TITLES IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 0743299469.…

Présentation de l'éditeur
Rieff offers no easy answers. Instead, his intensely personal book is a meditation on what it means to confront death in our culture. In his most profound work, this brilliant writer confronts the blunt feelings of the survivor -- the guilt, the self-questioning, the sense of not having done enough.
And he tries to understand what it means to desire so desperately, as his mother did to the end of her life, to try almost anything in order to go on living.
Drawing on his mother's heroic struggle, paying tribute to her doctors' ingenuity and faithfulness, and determined to tell what happened to them all, Swimming in a Sea of Death subtly draws wider lessons that will be of value to others when they find themselves in the same situation.
