A propos de cet article

FIRST EDITION. SIGNED BY HAROLD INGRAMS, DOREEN INGRAMS, LEILA INGRAMS AND ZAHRA INGRAMS. 8vo. (21.5 x 14 cm). pp.xii+228. Publisher's original sandy cloth, spine lettered in gilt. With the Ingrams' signatures to front free endpaper, a photograph of the family along with a newspaper clipping also tucked inside. 13 black & white plates, mostly after photographs by the author, double-page map printed on pale green paper, one vignette in the letterpress. Some trivial light scattered spotting to endpapers, prelims., title and edges, generally a very good copy indeed. William Harold Ingrams, (3 February 1897 9 December 1973) was a British colonial administrator who served in Zanzibar, Mauritius, Aden (1934-1945), the British occupation zone in Germany (1945-1947), and the Gold Coast. He is best known for his posting in Mukalla, together with his wife Doreen, where he oversaw the Hadhramaut region and brokered a truce between feuding tribes known as "Ingrams' Peace". He also collaborated with Glubb Pasha, establishing the Hadhrami Bedouin Legion in 1940, modelled after Glubb's Arab Legion in Transjordan. Their daughter Leila Ingrams (16 June 1940 22 March 2015) was a prominent British author, historian, and humanitarian. She dedicated her life to documenting the history and culture of Yemen and Ethiopia, as well as advocating for Arab-British understanding and Palestinian educational opportunities. For their pioneer work in Southern Arabia Harold and Doreen Ingrams were awarded jointly the Gold Medal of the Royal Geographical Society (1940) and the Lawrence Memorial Medal of the Royal Society for Asian Affairs (1939) - the only time either organisation offered a joint award. This book chronicles Ingrams' overland journey across the desert to take up his post as the Chief Commissioner to the Northern Territories of the Gold Coast (modern-day Ghana).…
