ALL WARMLY INSCRIBED TO 'RHINO'. Starting from San Francisco: 4to., pictorial boards showing a black and white image of Machu Picchu to the upper cover, lettered in red, white and black; pp. [viii], 9-79, [i]; typographic headings; with the original 7” spoken word LP contained within its envelope to the lower paste-down (opened); a good copy, shelf worn and rubbed, cracked along outer lower hinge (holding firm); a little browning and spotting, internally, mostly to the prelims; the record would benefit from a clean, but otherwise VG+, unscratched or damaged. First edition, with the author’s New Directions compliments slip to the ffep. A collection of autobiographical poems following Ferlinghetti as he roves across the Americas, and predominantly inspired by his trips to Chile and Peru in 1960 with Allen Ginsberg. Designed to be read aloud, it is fitting that the publication includes the LP recording of his readings of these verses. [together with] Berlin: 8vo., pp. [viii] pages, stapled, printed throughout in Brown with typographic title to upper cover; some spotting, browning and creasing; good to very good overall. First printing, this copy inscribed by Ferlinghetti to the upper cover: ‘To Rolf-Gunter Dienst (EL RHINO)” and signed by him beneath, dated in the year of publication, San Francisco November 1961. Purportedly printed in a run of 1000 copies, the poem was written during the heightened tensions of the Cold War and the erection of the Berlin Wall. [and] A ‘City Lights Books’ postcard from San Francisco: Yellow card (13.5 x 8.5cm approx); the address of Rolf-Gunter Dienst’s Hamburg address written, to one side, in Ferlinghetti’s hand with the original Air Mail and postage stamps; and the message to the reverse; essentially fine. Dated 1962, Ferlinghtti writes: “Dear Rhino - Thank you for new issue containing Burroughs - Corso - Creeley - Ginsberg etc. (one with blue cover) - Can you send 10 copies to CITY LIGHTS BOOKSTORE for us to sell? [Send mill with it + we’ll pay]. Salud! Lawrence Ferlingetti”. He adds “It’s a great issue!” to the left hand margin. A collection of items, all previously from the library of Rolf-Gunter Dienst (1942-2016), a painter, publisher and editor little known outside of Germany, but who had a prolific career, and was considered to be one of the most important German art critics of the 20th century. For a short period of time between 1960 to 1965, Dienst, along with his brother Klaus-Peter, edited and published an influential concrete poetry and literary magazine which they named Rhinozeros (and which earned him the nickname ‘Rhino’). Ginsberg’s ‘To an Old Poet in Peru’, penned during his travels with Ferlinghetti, was first published in Rhinozeros, which ran for just ten issues, and other contributors included such names as Ezra Pound, Jean Cocteau, Henry Miller and, most prolifically, William Burroughs.A fascinating mini archive of correspondence between two central publishers of the Beat Generation. …

Conditions de vente
Thank you for your interest in our books. By purchasing from us, you agree to be bound by the following terms and conditions, which constitute the terms of the agreement, other than purchase price of any items, between you as purchaser and us as seller. Please read them carefully to make sure you are comfortable with them before proceeding with your purchase. These terms apply to sales in person, online - through our website or any other platform, such as Abe Books, or others - and by telephone.
DESCRIPTIONS AND AUTHENTICITY
We have applied to be associate members of the Antiquarian Bookseller’s Association and abide by their Code of Good Practice. We describe all our items carefully and guarantee their authenticity and completeness as described. Our descriptions will note any flaws or defects. Please inspect your item carefully as soon as you receive it. Should you find a significant flaw or defect we have not described, you will be entitled to a full refund, including the original cost of delivery if you paid for it, on return of the item to us in the same condition as you bought it. Please notify us of the flaw and your intention to return the item as soon as possible, and not later than within 14 days of receipt.
VAT AND SALES TAX
Please note that printed books (if bound) are zero-rated for Value Added Tax in the UK, so there are no additional UK sales taxes to pay. However, you will be responsible for paying any import duties or sales tax due in any destination country, should the book be exported.
PAYMENT
We accept payment by credit and debit card, bank transfer (please ask us for our bank details) and UK cheque. Payment will be deemed to have been made once the funds have cleared in our account. Refunds will be made in the same way (and to the same account/card) as the original payment.
EXPORT LICENSING
Please note that some items may be subject to export licensing restrictions before they can leave the UK. These are books and photographs more than 50 years of age that exceed the value threshold at sale of the current UK Open General Export Licence. Please contact us for further information.
Manuscripts and archives more than 50 years old will require an export licence. This may take approximately four weeks to be granted, and dispatch for delivery cannot be made until the license has been granted and we have received confirmation of this. We can assist you with the licensing process, should you require help.
PASSING OF OWNERSHIP
Full legal title of any item you have ordered will pass to you only once we have received your payment in full and it has cleared in our account. If you fail to pay the full purchase price by the due date, we are entitled to terminate the sale, repossess the items and claim damages for any loss we may have suffered. Similarly, we will have the right to rescind a sale without notifying you where an adverse claim is made by a third party (e.g. someone claiming ownership of the items). If this should happen, we will notify you and ask you promptly to return the items to us and then issue a refund. This refund of the purchase price and original cost of delivery to you will be your sole recourse and remedy against us in respect to such claims.
Items that we pack and ship are covered by our insurance in transit, but once the items are delivered to you or collected by you, you will become responsible for them and the risk of damage or loss will pass to you. Please make appropriate arrangements for insurance from the moment of collection or delivery. If you would like to make your own arrangements for delivery, and not use the delivery service we would normally arrange for you, you will become responsible for the items from the moment we pass them to your delivery agent, so please make insurance and other arrangements for the management of risk of loss or damage accordingly.
If you take possession of an item or items before full legal title passes to you (e.g. if you take an item on approval), you will be responsible for keeping them in the condition they were when offered by us for sale, storing them securely and insuring them for their full sale price in case of damage or loss. You may not sell the items or hand them over to any other person without our consent in writing. Should we ask for the return of the items, you will make arrangements to return them to us as quickly and conveniently as possible.
LIMITATION OF LIABILITY
Any claim against us must be brought within a period of 6 years from the date on the invoice for the items purchased. We shall not accept any claim after this period. Our liability to you will be limited to the original purchase price of the item as paid by you plus the original cost of delivery to you as paid by you. This will be your sole recourse and remedy against us in respect to such claims.
COPYRIGHT
We retain ownership of the copyright of all images and descriptions of the items we offer for sale made by us. You cannot use our images or descriptions without prior written consent from us, and we will have the right to use - at our discretion - any such images and descriptions after the sale of the items. We also retain ownership of our website, its design and content, and the elements thereof, and you cannot use or reproduce any part of it without our prior permission in writing.
JURISDICTION AND SEVERABILITY
These terms and conditions and the agreement between us as seller and you as customer will in all aspects be construed and take effect in accordance with English law. If any part of these terms is found to be invalid, unlawful or unenforceable by any Court or other competent authority, it will not affect the remaining terms, which will continue to be valid and enforceable.
