1st Printing. Signed. 250 pages. Published in 2019. Book-length account on subject. One of Adam Gopnik's finest achievements. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, of which there are several. Published in a small and limited first print run by Basic Books as a hardcover original only that sold out shortly after publication. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Adam Gopnik's "A Thousand Small Sanities: The Moral Adventure of Liberalism". The best short book on its subject ever written in our time. In three succinct, eloquent essays, here is the distillation of Adam Gopnik's ongoing reflections on liberalism that the liberal pantheon, from John Stuart Mill to Lionel Trilling, would have admired: "What Is Liberalism"; "Why The Right Hates Liberalism"; and "Why The Left Hates Liberalism". We live in a wretched and hapless time because we are caught between two extreme - and truly evil - ideologies: Right-wing fundamentalism and left-wing radicalism, which are, in the end, two sides of the same coin. Whereas liberalism is not "a political theory applied to life but life applied to political theory". Liberalism, in sum, is pragmatic and grounded in reality yet daring and humane. "Taking us from Montaigne to Mill, from 'Middlemarch' to the Civil Rights Movement, Adam Gopnik argues that liberalism is not a form of centrism, nor simply another word for free markets, nor merely a term denoting a set of rights. It is something far more ambitious: The search for radical change by humane measures. In an age of autocracy, our lives may depend on its continuation" (Publisher's blurb). An absolute "must-have" title for Adam Gopnik collectors. This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed and dated (in the year of publication) in black pen-marker on the title page by the author: "Adam Gopnik 2019". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a contemporary classic. As far as we know, this is the only such signed and publication-year dated copy of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws, are in subsequent printings, or are remainder-marked. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. One of the most brilliant writers of our time. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER ADAM GOPNIK TITLES IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 154169936X.…
