Signed by author on first page. 158 pages. 11.5" X 9.75" x 1" Art book to accompany Tea Time in Flanders exhibit at the Flagstaff House Museum of Tea Ware in Hong Kong from 10 April- 15 July 1996. Flanders - a region situated in the western part of Belgium adjacent to France - was occupied by Austria after the Spanish Succession War (1701 to 1713) until the end of the 18th century. Starting from 1715 merchants in Flanders started to make voyages to the Orient passing the Cape of Good Hope, the Indian Ocean, and the South China Sea, with a view to develop trade with Chin. The Flemish merchants used silver coins to exchange for Chinese tea, silk, and porcelain, among which tea was the most profitable item. In 1723 the General Imperial India Company, a stock company, was established by the merchants in order to regulate the trade with China and to avoid competition among merchants. As a result of the tea trade with China, the people of Flanders acquired the habit of tea drinking and knowledge on other aspects of Chinese culture. This exhibition features over 120 exhibits including ship models, documents, items used by the sailors, tea leaves, tea caddies, tea vessels, porcelain of daily usage, paintings, and other trade items. The exhibits help to reconstruct the trade relationship between China and Flanders in the 18th century so that visitors can get a better understanding of the Sino-European trade at the time.
