A propos de cet article

Typed letter signed by Theodore Roosevelt as Governor of New York, with an autograph correction in his hand, selecting a labor leader for New York’s delegation to the Chicago Conference on Trusts. One page, on State of New York Executive Chamber, Albany, stationery with the engraved arms of the state, written “At Oyster Bay, N.Y.,” dated August 16th, 1899, and addressed to his clerk Thomas Newcomb, with the blue Executive Chamber receiving stamp at the upper right. The letter reads in full, “My dear Mr. Newcomb: - Please appoint Henry White one of the delegates to the conference on trusts. He is a labor leader and I think you have his address. I have written him several letters early this year, and you will probably find his address in the letter books. I have signed and Mr. Loeb has returned to you in a package addressed to Col. Treadwell the several commissions brought down by Mr. Knapp. The Remington appointment is all right. Albert Shaw is not an M. D. Erase it from the certificate. Very truly yours, Theodore Roosevelt.” The final sentence, “Erase it from the certificate,” is added in Roosevelt’s own hand. Written less than a month before the conference, the letter shows Roosevelt personally shaping the New York delegation, ensuring organized labor a voice through Henry White, general secretary of the United Garment Workers of America, and correcting the credentials of the editor Albert Shaw, who held a Ph.D. rather than a medical degree. Matted and framed with a color portrait of Roosevelt and a separate signature beneath, “Theodore Roosevelt." In fine condition with mail folds. The entire piece measures 20 inches by 10 inches. Theodore Roosevelt was an American statesman, author, explorer, soldier, naturalist, and reformer who served as the twenty-sixth President of the United States from 1901 to 1909. After his return from Cuba as the hero of the Rough Riders, he was elected Governor of New York in 1898, and in his two years in Albany he pressed for civil service reform, a tax on public utility franchises, and stronger regulation of the great corporations, earning a reputation as an independent reformer that led the party bosses to move him into the vice presidency in 1900. The Chicago Conference on Trusts, held from September 13 to 16, 1899, under the auspices of the Civic Federation of Chicago, brought together delegates appointed by governors, legislatures, and business, labor, and farm organizations from across the country to debate the rapid growth of industrial combinations, and it helped set the terms of the national argument over monopoly that Roosevelt would carry into the White House as the trust-buster. Henry White led the United Garment Workers of America, and Albert Shaw, editor of the American Monthly Review of Reviews, was a political scientist and longtime friend and correspondent of Roosevelt. Mr. Loeb was William Loeb Jr., Roosevelt’s private secretary in Albany, who followed him to the White House.…
