[Colophon:] "This edition is limited to five hundred and twenty copies, of which two hundred and fifty are for sale in Great Britain and Ireland, two hundred and fifty are for sale in the United States of America, and twenty are for presentation. This is No. 334 [signed] Osbert Sitwell". 8" x 10 1/2", [18] unnumbered, printed pages; finely printed on laid paper with a large, modern-style woodcut initial A, printed in red. Blue cloth spine with titling gilt vertically on spine, and boards covered in a marbled-design cloth, top edge gilt. Title-printed, light gray-green dustjacket (which appears much lighter in color in the scan), this dj. shows age-related tanning to margins & edges, 3" section missing at upper spine area of dj., with a 4" section of creasing & tears to the dj. paper in upper left (spine) corner area of back dj. panel. This dj. is made of a rather fragile type of paper, and few of them now survive. Book shows light, age-related tanning to paste-downs, endpapers, else, a fine copy in the scarce dj. (archival conservation is recommended for this dustjacket). Scan shows the spine & front panel of the dustjacket (in a much lighter color). Scarce book. "[-]When, last year, my new book of poems was being printed -- a group of portraits of an old friend of mine, which was entitled 'Miss Mew' and issued in a limited edition by the Mill House Press -- at the end of it I caused to be inserted the following notice: 'Portrait Poems' Important Notice Do You Want To Interest Posterity? Mr. Osbert Sitwell has much pleasure in announcing that he is now willing to accept commissions from clients who wish to have their likenesses executed." (From the Preface, p. [9]). First edition, limited edition of 520 numbered copies signed by the author. Handsomely printed and bound by The Windmill Press, Kingswood Surrey; with a large woodcut letter A in red beginning the poem. Small 4to., original blue cloth backed marbled paper covered boards, lettered in gilt on spine. A near fine copy (without scarce dust wrapper). Pleading the cause of a poet's penury, Osbert Sitwell planned to place an advertisement in the Mill House Press edition of "Miss Mew" offering his services as the bespoke author for literary portrait poems to allow customers "to interest posterity". This tongue-in-cheek piece of self marketing through base flattery was seen in advance of the publication of "Miss Mew" by a correspondent of the Times Newspaper, and so as not to lose this premature interest in the scheme, he placed an advertisement for the literary portraits in the newspaper. The response to the advertisement was a complete bust, until the writer Michael Arlen met Sitwell at a party. Arlen had seen the Times advertisement and enquired of Sitwell what the response had been. On hearing that no commissions had been placed "he became, with typical enterprise, and, if it is permitted for me to say so, artistic insight, my first applicant". N° de réf. du vendeur 38229
