FIRST UK EDITION. The book has mild pushing to spine tips and a small single penned name to upper front paste down. Bright crimson unfaded top stain. The wrapper has a little soiling to the rear cover with a very small chip to upper edge of rear cover. Light browning to spine. Overall a near fine copy. This one is particularly rare as it is signed by the author without dedication to the title page. The novel is the first book of Grass's Danziger Trilogie (Danzig Trilogy). It is widely regarded as the author's masterpiece. Adapted to the big screen in 1979 to critical acclaim. This title is particularly rare to find signed. N° de réf. du vendeur 002766

Shelved Room C. Günter Grass was born October 16, 1927 in the Free City of Danzig (today Gda?sk, Poland) to parents of German and Pomeranian-Polish descent. Grass would gain great acclaim from his first and most well-known work "The Tin Drum" published in 1959 as well as it's sequels "Cat and Mouse", published in 1961, and "Dog Years", published in 1963 which have collectively come to be known as "The Danzig Trilogy". The trilogy explores the complexities and hardships endured by the various peoples of the then Free City of Danzig (now Gda?sk) during the rise of Nazism and it's effects during and after the Second World War. Grass himself had firsthand experience with Nazism, having enlisted and been drafted into the Waffen-SS in 1944, an experience which likely pushed his outspoken criticism of Nazism and German failures to properly deal with it's Nazi past. "The Danzig Trilogy" is widely hailed as Grass' best work and despite initial bans for supposedly inappropriate topics, the trilogy as a whole has since been vindicated and is widely held as a classic of post-War German literature. "The Tin Drum" would see a film adaptation of the same in 1979 which itself saw some success in then West Germany. 1389714. Special Collections. First American Editions, First Printings.
