Item description from seller

* Gurney copy. * First Edition, later[?] quarter calf over original marbled paper boards. Sm.8vo, title + 26 leaves engraved with vignette & text on rectos only, text slightly dusty at edges, marbled boards a little scuffed at extremities, a very good copy of a fragile little piece. With early 19thC signature of E. Gurney, Walworth : and rear endpaper with neat bookseller's label : also a neat modern booklabel. *** The bookseller's label states 'Bought at J. Souter's School Library, No 78, North Side of St Paul's Church Yard. N.B. Books of Education in all Languages, and Children's Books of every description'. *** The Gurneys of Walworth were England's greatest stenographic and court reporting dynasty. Their famous system of shorthand was developed by Thomas Gurney 1705 - 1770, who acquired the rights to report Old Bailey Trials verbatim, and his Brachygraphy, or Short Writing, Made Easy to the Meanest Capacity was issued in 18 editions from 1750 through to 1884. The system was further improved by his son Joseph Gurney 1744 - 1815, who bequeathed the business and his estate to his three children. *** The signature on the endpaper of E. Gurney, Walworth, is most likely that of Joseph Gurney's daughter Elizabeth Gurney. ***** To confirm availability before ordering, please click the link Ask Bookseller A Question.
