A propos de cet article

Edinburgh: Published by the author, 1880. First and only edition. This is a very good copy. In the original binding of red faux leather, which has some marginal closed tearing at the joint. Some mild soiling to the upper. Gilt armorial designs to upper and lower board, with gilt titling at the spine. The text blocks are bright and clean and the top edge gilt. Internally, the book is fine, with a little preliminary foxing. This copy is inscribed by the author in black ink: ‘To Dr. George Skene Keith, with all kind regards and many thanks. Wm. Fraser, Edinburgh, 11 July, 1890’. Neatly tipped in to the facing page is a wonderful manuscript letter by the author, also addressed to George Skene Keith, it reads: ‘Dear Dr. Keith, | My little maid omitted to inform | me of your kind call yesterday. This | I regret, and still more that I missed | the pleasure of seeing you. Since our | last meeting we have both been unwell. | I hope that your illness was not | serious, and that you are now | quite restored. My illness was serious, | and I am not yet quite restored. | After the lapse of twenty years, I had | a second attack of pleurisy. I wished | much to explain to you all about it, | and I hope still to do so | before I leave Edinburgh | for some time. | I would willingly wait upon you at Moidart. But | this has been an unlucky week of | visits for me. On Monday I got a | drenching returning from Redhall, | and another on Wednesday, I will | attend you here any afternoon you | are pleased to command me. | In Blackwood for sure there is a | review of “The Two Heiresses of Buccleuch”. | This has revived the interest in them | similar to what occurred when | they were disinterested by me many | years ago. The review in Blackwood | also reminded me that I had a | few copies of the work, only a few | were printed, and it is rare. | I have much pleasure in sending | herewith a copy for your kind | acceptance. | Believe me to be, | Your very faithful and obliged, | Wm. Fraser’. A fine letter, acknowledging a review of the work and the scarcity of the work in print. Overall, this is a very good association copy. Sir William Fraser (1816–1898) was the foremost Scottish genealogist and family historian of the Victorian age, employed by many of the great aristocratic houses of Britain to arrange, edit, and publish their family archives. His works, often privately printed and produced to a high standard, remain indispensable sources for the study of Scottish landed society and genealogy. A pleasing and highly evocative Victorian association copy, linking one of Scotland's leading historians with Dr. George Skene Keith, a prominent contemporary intellectual, and preserving a rare piece of evidence for the contemporary reception of Fraser's work.…
