A propos de cet article

First edition, presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To Mr Jaques Faure. You are a gentleman, BUT the other EDITORS at the PARIS Conde NAST outfit, are INTELLECTUALLY CONSTIPATED. Weegee Paris 1961". After publishing this biography, Weegee spent two years in Paris, where Faure was an art director at Vogue. Weegee, the pseudonym of Arthur Fellig (1899-1968), developed his signature photographic style by following the city's emergency services and documenting their activity. In 1938, he was the only New York newspaper reporter with a permit to have a portable police-band shortwave radio. He listened closely to police broadcasts and prided himself on beating the authorities to the scene, keeping a portable darkroom in the trunk of his car in order to get his freelance product to the newspapers first. He later also worked in cinema, initially making his own short films and later collaborating with film directors such as Jack Donohue and Stanley Kubrick. This copy comes from the collection of Rolling Stones drummer and jazz aficionado Charlie Watts and has his posthumous bookplate. Octavo. Half-tone photographic portrait frontispiece by Philippe Halsman, 25 photographic plates. Original black cloth, spine lettered in gilt, front board with facsimile of Weegee's studio stamp in gilt. With dust jacket. Spine faded, small wear to ends and corners, a little rubbing and cockling to cloth; unclipped jacket with light rubbing: a very good copy in like jacket. …
