A propos de cet article

Original land indenture signed by William Penn. Dated the twenty-second day of December 1681, in the thirty-third year of the reign of King Charles the Second, granting five hundred acres of land in the newly chartered Province of Pennsylvania to John Hewse, collar maker, of the parish of St. Clement in the suburbs of the City of Oxford, for the sum of ten pounds. Partially printed on a large vellum membrane with a calligraphic heading and an indented, scalloped top edge, the deed recites King Charles the Second’s grant of the province to Penn by letters patent of the fourth day of March 1681, conveys the land to be held of Penn and his heirs as of the Seigniory of Windsor at a yearly quit rent of one shilling for every hundred acres, and refers to the Conditions or Concessions agreed between Penn and the first purchasers on the eleventh day of July 1681. Signed “Wm Penn” at the foot, with the red wax seal on its vellum tag. The tract has a notable later history. On February 2, 1688, Hewse conveyed it to Robert Ewer, a Philadelphia merchant, who sold a portion to William Buzby, a Quaker farmer of Oxford Township. Buzby married Sarah Seary, widow of Thomas Seary, in 1685, and before the log meeting house at Frankford was completed the earliest Friends’ gatherings there were held at her home. The property changed hands several times before it was acquired in 1813 for the founding of the Friends’ Asylum for the Relief of Persons Deprived of the Use of Their Reason. Matted and framed with an engraved portrait of Penn. In near fine condition with creasing from old folds and small repaired separations and losses along the folds, affecting some text. The entire piece measures 42 inches by 30.5 inches. William Penn received the charter for Pennsylvania from King Charles the Second on March 4, 1681, in settlement of a debt of some sixteen thousand pounds owed by the Crown to his late father, Admiral Sir William Penn. A Quaker who had been imprisoned for his faith, Penn conceived the province as a “holy experiment” in religious liberty and representative government, and to finance it he sold tracts of land in England to so-called First Purchasers, many of them fellow Quakers, before a single acre had been surveyed. Deeds such as this one, issued in the months after the charter and before Penn himself sailed for America in the summer of 1682, are among the founding documents of the colony, and the purchasers they record were among the earliest settlers and investors of Pennsylvania. Penn published his Frame of Government in 1682, laid out the city of Philadelphia, and concluded his celebrated treaty of friendship with the Lenape, establishing a colony whose principles of toleration and self-government would later shape the founding of the United States. The Friends’ Asylum, established in 1813 on land descended from this grant, survives today as Friends Hospital in Philadelphia, the oldest private psychiatric hospital in the United States. …
