This 1882 "Handbook to Chester Cathedral" by J. S. Howson, LACKS ITS COVER, and is considerably worn and smudged, else intact. The Ground Plan was by Sir Gilbert Scott, and the book was published by Phillipson & Golder in Chester, Cheshire, England. This is the First Edition, and is scarce on the market. Some sections of the book may well be of interest to genealogists. There is a brief section on the Shrine of St. Werburgh. TITLE : Hand-Book to Chester Cathedral : Short chapters on its history, architecture, and recent restoration. With special reference to its restoration between 1868 and 1876. AUTHOR : J. S. LACKS WRAPS (Paper cover) Contains a Ground Plan; has an Appendix; period advertising, front and back; [iv] + 66 pages , plus 10 pages front and back of advertising. CONTENTS : * History of the Diocese * History of the Fabric * Early Restorations * The Exterior * The North Transept * The South Transept * The Organ * The Choir * The Aisles of the Choir * The Lady Chapel * The Central Tower * The Cloisters and Refectory * The Chapter House and Library * The Windows * The Monuments * Appendix : 1) The Glass in the Lady Chapel; 2) Specification of the Organ; 3) Stalls in the Choir ; 4) Misereres in the Stalls; 5) Note on the Bells; 6) Note on St Werburgh's Shrine . Parts 4 and 5 of the Appendix contain many names of individuals, well-known historical personages, as well as lesser known and forgotten individuals. Some of these may well be of interest for genealogists. CONDITION -- FAIR : LACKS COVER -- This is a previously owned book that is in rough condition, lacking it cover, and displaying considerable wear - foxing, scuffing, smudging, staining (most seriously on the rear exterior and fore-edge of the text-block) and creasing - plus the staples are rusted, with attendant discoloration of the paper abutting the staples. The staples , being rusted, are likely fragile, however the text-block as a whole is intact with no detached leaves (although the attachment of the final leaf is tenuous. There is evidence of mending neatly effected to the first leaf (just preceding the title page). The interior, while it has some shallow creasing, dog-eared corner tips, and scattered small spotting and or smudges, remains clean. On the recto of the final leaf are some penciled names and places.
