A propos de cet article

Wilder, Alexander. A Brief Outline of Medical History and Sects of Physicians, 1901, surveys the development of medicine from antiquity through the nineteenth century, with particular attention to competing medical schools and the history of American Eclectic medicine. Wilder traces medical thought through Greece, Egypt, India, and other early traditions before concentrating on developments from the seventeenth century onward. His principal emphasis is the nineteenth-century American medical landscape, in which Eclectic practitioners promoted botanical remedies and other therapeutic methods outside the dominant regular medical establishment. A Brief Outline of Medical History and Sects of Physicians, from the Earliest Historic Period; with an Extended Account of the New Schools of the Healing Art in the Nineteenth Century and Especially a History of the American Eclectic Practice of Medicine. New Sharon: New England Eclectic Publishing Co., 1901. First Edition. 946 pages. Hardcover. Later sections address medical schools, professional organizations, legislation affecting practitioners, and debates over the legal and institutional control of medical practice. Published when Eclectic medicine remained an active competitor within American medical education and practice, Wilder's volume documents how one of its advocates understood both the history of medicine and the profession's increasingly contested regulatory structure. Its closing attention to "medical freedom" places therapeutic practice alongside questions of licensing, institutional authority, and the power to define legitimate medicine in the United States. Some chipping to front cover and spotting to fore edge; interior clean and bright. Overall very good condition.…
