Art, music and design was at a turning point and the New London Gallery exhibition hired British graphic artist Gordon House (who was exhibiting with them) to radically rethink and redesign this innovative 1961 exhibition catalogue. As the 1960s moved on, House also designed for the pop world, working for The Beatles, designing their White album and large parts of the Sergeant Pepper album. Several of the young artists who participated went on to achieve immense critical acclaim, international recognition, and major museum retrospectives: Sir Anthony Caro: Widely considered one of the most influential master sculptors of the 20th century, he revolutionized sculpture by abandoning the traditional plinth, placing his welded-steel assemblages directly onto the floor to engage the viewer's space. He went on to receive a knighthood, the Order of Merit, and major retrospectives at The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York and Tate Britain in London. Gillian Ayres CBE: One of Britain’s most significant abstract painters, celebrated for her vibrant, thickly applied impasto and monumental canvases. She became one of the few women associated with the Situation group and was later elected a Royal Academician. She received a CBE and was short-listed for the Turner Prize in 1989. John Hoyland: Universally recognized as one of the country's leading abstract colorists. Hoyland’s career spanned decades of relentless experimentation with acrylics, staining, and heavy textures. He had a massive solo retrospective at the Serpentine Gallery in 1979 and a definitive career survey at Tate Britain in 2006. William Turnbull: A dual-threat master of both minimalist abstract painting and modernist bronze sculpture. Already established as a teacher at the Central School of Art by 1961, Turnbull's reductionist "monochrome" paintings and totem-like sculptures earned him a major retrospective at the Tate Gallery in 1973. Richard Smith: Became internationally famous for his "shaped canvases," stretching painted fabric over three-dimensional, kite-like wooden frames. He won the grand prize at the 1967 São Paulo Biennial and represented Britain at the 1970 Venice Biennale. Robyn Denny: Denny gained widespread fame for his meticulously planned, architectural murals and paintings. In 1973, he became the youngest artist ever to be given a solo retrospective at the Tate Gallery. The original owner of this catalogue Alan J. Hodgson (AJH) was a prominent award-winning Canadian architect (1928 - 2018) and a key figure in adapting severe, concrete-heavy International Modernism into a softer, regional aesthetic.
