Item description from seller

FIRST MULTINATIONAL TREATY FOR THE ABOLITION OF THE SLAVE TRADE. Folio (12.75 inches). Signed at London, December 20, 1841. Presented to both Houses of Parliament, by Command of Her Majesty, February, 1842. 24 pages. In parallel columns of English and French text. Old manuscript page numbers at the top right corners of leaves. Stitched. Untrimmed. Page edges lightly browned, with a few chips. This was the first multilateral agreement aimed at abolishing the African slave trade. It was signed in London on 20 December 1841 by the representatives of Great Britain, Austria, France, Prussia, and Russia. Austria, Great Britain, Prussia and Russia subsequently ratified the treaty, but France declined to do so. The signatories agreed that the African slave trade was an act of piracy, and agreed to suppress the slave trade through mutual enforcement by authorising the navies of the other signatories to search merchant ships sailing under their flag in the Atlantic Ocean and Indian Ocean if there were reasonable grounds to suspect them of engaging in slave traffic or if the vessel appeared to be fitted out for that purpose. Explicit instructions were outlined for cruizers involved with vessel searches, with guideline for confiscations, punishments, and wrongful detentions.
