A propos de cet article

First edition, published in the US by Fields, Osgood, & Co. in 1870. ****A near fine copy in dark-green cloth-covered boards, with beveled edges, gilt titles and decoration to the spine, and blind-embossed borders to the front and back boards. The boards are remarkably clean and fresh, with just some inevitable rubbing at the extremities, commensurate with a book that is now more than 150 years old. The fragile cloth covering is just slightly frayed at the top and bottom of the spine. The gilt titles and decorations are still very bright. All edges of the page block are clean with no foxing. No serious bumps - just rubbing and creasing to the corner tips. No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Internally also near fine, with no previous ownership inscriptions. No splitting to the fragile endpapers. No internal splitting to the pages. Pages clean, just lightly tanned, with no obvious marks or annotations in the text. No foxing and no serious creases or tears (please see scans). 380 pages. 190mm x 130mm. Contents: Dryden, Witchcraft, Shakespeare Once More, New England Two Centuries Ago, Lessing, Rousseau and the Sentimentalists. "Credulity, as a mental and moral phenomenon, manifests itself in widely different ways, according as it chances to be the daughter of fancy or terror. The one lies warm about the heart as Folk-lore, fills moonlit dells with dancing fairies --- the other is a bird of night, whose shadow sends a chill among the roots of the hair - sucks with the vampire, gorges with the ghoul, is choked by the night-hag, pines away under the witch's charm, and commits uncleanness with the embodied Principle of Evil. (Quote taken from the chapter on Witchcraft) 'James Russell Lowell (Feb 22, 1819 - Aug 12, 1891) was an American Romantic poet, critic, editor, and diplomat. He is associated with the fireside poets, a group of New England writers who were among the first American poets to rival the popularity of British poets. These writers usually used conventional forms and meters in their poetry, making them suitable for families entertaining at their firesides. Lowell graduated from Harvard College in 1838, despite his reputation as a troublemaker, and went on to earn a law degree from Harvard Law School. He published his first collection of poetry in 1841 and married Maria White in 1844. The couple had several children, though only one survived past childhood. He became involved in the movement to abolish slavery. Lowell used poetry to express his anti-slavery views and took a job in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, as the editor of an abolitionist newspaper. After moving back to Cambridge, Lowell was one of the founders of The Pioneer, a journal which lasted only three issues. He gained notoriety in 1848 with the publication of "A Fable for Critics", a book-length poem satirizing contemporary critics and poets. The same year, he published "The Biglow Papers", which increased his fame. He went on to publish several other poetry collections and essay collections throughout his literary career. Maria died in 1853, and Lowell accepted a professorship of languages at Harvard in 1854. He traveled to Europe before officially assuming his teaching duties in 1856, and married Frances Dunlap shortly thereafter in 1857. That year, Lowell also became editor of The Atlantic Monthly. He continued to teach at Harvard for twenty years. He received his first political appointment, the ambassadorship to the Kingdom of Spain, 20 years later. He was later appointed ambassador to the Court of St. James's. He spent his last years in Cambridge in the same estate where he was born, and died there in 1891. A beautifully preserved Victorian first edition, in the original cloth-covered binding. An attractive edition of this collection of essays by New England poet James Russell Lowell. Very uncommon to find both in this condition and in the UK. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging. …
