A propos de cet article

Second impression of the true first edition, printed before publication in November 1944. Illustrated with 24 pages of photographs, and maps within the text. ***Very good in dark blue cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine. Head of spine slightly creased. Slight wrinkle to the cloth on the spine. Boards clean and unmarked. Corners sharp. Very light foxing to the page block edges. Pages clean. Spine tight. ***In a near fine price-clipped printed dustwrapper. Edges of dustwrapper just very slightly rubbed, mainly at the top of the spine. ***356 pages including a detailed Index. 222 mm x 150mm. ***'"Per Ardua ad astra" the famous motto of the R.A.F., could be translated "the steep way to the stars". The R.A.F.'s climb to immortality has been both steep and swift. In Per Ardua , Mr. Saunders traces it from the early pioneering days, through the stern and hazardous air campaigns of 1914-18, up to the outbreak of the present war. The author has chronicled the recent achievements of the R.A.F. in his official books, The Battle of Britain, Bomber Command, and Coastal Command. Fully to appreciate these achievements - the courage, the skill, the tradition of attack which lie behind them - we must look back with him to the brief, brilliant careers of the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service, which laid the foundation of Britain's air power. Per Ardua is an authoritative history; and it has caught from its subject the spirited unorthodoxy, the humour and the professional seriousness which are characteristic of the R.A.F. tradition.' (Quote taken from inside front flap of dustwrapper). ***Second impression of the true first edition, printed before publication in November 1944. A beautifully preserved wartime publication, hard to find now in the original dustwrapper, in complete, collectable condition. Whilst printed to War Economy standards, using quite thin paper, Oxford University Press obviously had access to superior materials, as the book is much more robustly produced than most books from that period. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.…
