Hardcover. Etat : Near Fine. 1st Edition. First Edition, First Printing. Originally published in Great Britain in 1845, this has been considered one of the primary reference sources for historians and model makers. It follows very closely the arrangements of David Steel who first published a book under this title in 1796 (with later editions in 1806 & 1818). Green cloth boards with bright gilt titling on the spine, blind stamped ruling on border of front. 116 pages of text and illustrations followed by approximately 70 pages of tables and charts. The fifteen engraved plates are based on David Steel but were newly drawn and engraved by J. S. Hobbs to depict ships of the mid-19th century. Witt included Biddlecombe in his bibliography as it follows closely in the Steel tradition and marks the end of the sailing ship era. The Marine Research Society of Salem reproduced Biddlecombe s work here in 1925. This is #8 in their series. Biddlecombe divides his work into five parts. (1) Alphabetical Explanation of the Terms and Phrases used in Rigging. (2) Directions for the Performing of Operations Incidental to Rigging, and for Preparing it on Shore. (3) Progressive Method of Rigging Ships. (4) Description of Reeving the Running Rigging and Bending the Sails. (5) Tables of the Quantities and Dimensions of the Standing and Running Rigging of Ships, Brigs, Fore-and-Aft Schooners, and Cutters, etc. This copy lacks the DJ. N° de réf. du vendeur blb01076
