Item description from seller

ARTHUR DOVE A RETROSPECTIVE 1997 MODERNIST ABSTRACTIONIST AMERICAN ARTIST DJ. Quoting from the flap of the dust jacket: The American artist Arthur Dove (1880-1946), purportedly the first artist to have produced an abstract painting, has always occupied a central place in writings on early American modernism. This book accompanies the first major exhibition on Dove since 1974. The exhibition, organized by the Addison Gallery of American Art and the Phillips Collection, covers the period from 1908, the year after Dove took up painting, through 1946, the year of his death. It is comprised of approximately eighty paintings, collages, pastels, and charcoal drawings. I found an interesting article in Wikipedia about Dove and his relationship with Alfred Stieglitz who promoted his work. I won t quote it here but recommend it to your interest. I am pleased to offer: Arthur Dove: A Retrospective, by Debra Bricker Balken in collaboration with William C. Agee and Elizabeth Hutton Turner. This large hard cover book (9 ¼ x 12 ¼ inches, 200 pages, the last four being blank) was published by the MIT Press, dated 1997 and a First Edition in anticipation of the Exhibition which took place from September 1997 to October 1998, at the Phillips Collection in Washington, the Whitney Museum in New York, the Addison Gallery in Andover, Massachusetts and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. It is bound in light green cloth with gilt titles on cover and spine and protected by a pictorial dust jacket. Condition: This book is in near fine condition. The dust jacket is clean and bright with just the slightest sign of edge wear, basically some rolling of the upper & lower edges. The hard covers are also clean and bright as are the gilt titles but there is a tiny (1/8 of an inch) band of sunning on the lower front edge. Inside, the book is unmarked, and the pages and plates are clean and bright from cover to cover. Both hinges are intact, and the binding is tight and sound. This book is not ex-library or a remainder.
