A propos de cet article

A classic Edwardian Alpine study by Sir Martin Conway, featuring 70 tissue-guarded color plates by A. D. McCormick. Praised at publication for exceptional color printing, The Alps blends mountaineering, geology, and aesthetic reflection in one of Adam & Charles Black’s finest illustrated travel books. A classic early twentieth-century work on the Alpine landscape by Sir Martin Conway—mountaineer, art historian, and one of the most eloquent writers on mountain experience of his generation. Departing from purely technical expedition narratives, Conway combines travel writing, geology, aesthetics, and personal observation to convey the physical structure and emotional power of the Alps. Chapters range from the joy of snow and the beauty of glaciers to mountain formation, high passes, and the elusive ‘mood’ of the mountains, making the volume as reflective as it is descriptive. Bound in blue cloth over boards with gilt lettering and ornate illustration to the front board and spine. Top edge gilt. Octavo, 9 inches tall; xiv, 294 pages, followed by 4 pages of publisher’s advertisements. Bindings are tight and square. Text is clean. Heavy toning to the preliminary leaves, toning present but even throughout the text block. Moderate handling wear with light rubbing to corners. A solid, attractive copy of a color-plate book that is frequently encountered in lesser condition. The book is especially prized for its illustration program: seventy captioned, tissue-guarded color plates by A. D. McCormick, whose work was praised at publication for the exceptional quality of its color printing. The Spectator called the illustrations ‘almost the most successful specimens of colour-printing we have met with,’ highlighting the volume as a high point in Edwardian illustrated travel books. McCormick’s Alpine scenes balance topographical accuracy with atmospheric sensitivity, complementing Conway’s prose. Subjects: Alps (Mountains), Alpine Travel, Mountaineering History, Glaciers, Mountain Landscapes, A. D. McCormick, Edwardian Illustration, Color Plate Books, British Travel Writing, Travel Literature, Mountaineering, Illustrated Non-Fiction, Landscape Art References: Neate 181; Krawczyk 212; The Spectator, 1904.…
