1832. First edition. Title-page (no half-title), viii (dedication), cli (memoir and reminiscences), [ii], 190pp., frontispiece portrait, and 1 illustration by George Cruikshank. Top edge gilt. 'Altrive Tales' by James Hogg (1770-1835) is the only volume to have been published of a projected twelve-volume set with that title bringing together his collected prose fiction. It consists of an updated autobiographical memoir, a new novella, and two reprinted short stories. The book is bound in later (probably c1900) three-quarter leather over brown cloth covered boards with gold titling and four thin raised bands on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with some shelf wear to the boards and light scuffing to the leather on the spine. There is a thin split of about 1 3/4" in the leather on the top of the hinges. The contents are tight and clean apart from a few small marks and some scattered light foxing. There is no inscription.
