Item description from seller

xix, 279 pp. Original cloth. Very Good, in quite worn dust jacket. This copy does NOT have any library markings. First Edition. English translation of Garrison-Morton 360 (citing 1906 German ed.): "Books 9, 5-15 are lost in the Greek original, but preserved in a ninth century Arabic version, which M. Simon . . . edits and translates into German. An English translation of Simon's Arabic text was published by W. L. H. Duckworth [OFFERED HERE]." COPY OF BERNARD TOWERS, one of the two editors, with his pencil signature, dated 1/62, on the front flyleaf. Pencilling by Towers on pp. 120-123, including notes in margin on p. 122. OFFERED WITH: Typed Letter, Signed, March 3, 1962, from RAYMOND MORTIMER to BERNARD TOWERS (see photo). Mortimer had reviewed the book and Towers must have written to Mortimer thanking him for his review. This letter is Mortimer's reply to what Towers wrote to him. "Charles Raymond Bell Mortimer CBE, who wrote under the name Raymond Mortimer, was a British writer on art and literature, known mostly as a critic and literary editor. . . . He became literary editor of the New Statesman, worked at the BBC and in liaison with the Free French in World War II, and subsequently as a book reviewer for The Sunday Times. He was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 1955 Birthday Honours. He was a friend of the poet and novelist Vita Sackville-West, and was involved in a long-term relationship with her husband, author and British diplomat Harold Nicolson. Raymond Mortimer joined the three owners of Long Crichel House in Dorset, friends Edward Sackville West, Desmond Shawe-Taylor and Eardley Knollys, as one of the residents, after World War II. There they held salons, entertaining some of the great literary and artistic figures of the day, including E.M. Forster, Nancy Mitford, Benjamin Britten, Laurie Lee, Ben Nicolson and Graham Greene" (Wikipedia).
