First UK Edition. WITH ILLUSTRATIONS BY DAVID CORNWELL (better known as JOHN LE CARRE). A first edition, first printing published by Hodder & Stoughton in 1962. Publisher's quarter-bound, green and yellow textured cloth, gilt titles to green faux leather spine strip. A hint of foxing to the top edge and faint evidence of a previous owner's inscription rubbed out from the front free end-paper otherwise VG indeed in like D/W rubbed to the edges of the spine and with several, minor nicks. Maxwell Knight, was a British spymaster (he ran section B5b in MI5 during WW2), naturalist and broadcaster and was reputedly a model for the James Bond character "M". Maxwell Knight played major roles in surveillance of an early British Fascist party as well as the main Communist Party. "Birdwatcher" is old British Intelligence slang for a spy and, as an adult, Knight applied his skills as "a nature detective": careful observation and a patient approach to the accumulation of facts. The illustrations in the book were produced by David Cornwell (himself another former MI5 officer). David Cornwell, is of course, better known as John Le Carre. David Cornwell (John Le Carre) had just published (in June 1961) his first novel 'Call For The Dead' and was about to publish his second novel 'A Murder of Quality' in July 1962. Rare. Photographs/scans available upon request. N° de réf. du vendeur 355490718861
