Very rare 1834 First Edition (SD). Most importantly, this book is very solidly bound. It's also square and tight. In the first few photographs you can see some of the staining on the front and rear covers. However they are not much worn, just some rub through at the corners and middle edges. The nearly 183-year-old label is still present on the spine, and has only a little bit of loss, and you can make out most of the letters in 'Southard Argument'. There is an old ownership signature on the first front end paper and a jaggy line on the front inside cover and rear inside cover (as if someone, long ago, was testing there pen's ink). Other than that, there isn't any writing/underlining, etc., on any of the pages of the text. Nor are there any markings or attachments. This is NOT an ex-library. The pages are in better condition than what one might expect. I saw only two with a small loss at the bottom corner away from the print. I would describe the foxing in the book as moderate to occasionally light or heavy. It does not interfere with the reading of the book, though it can be found on just about every page. This I understand will be the case with every copy for sale. Finally, there are sharp tears on the last two blank rear end papers. Samuel Lewis Southard was a prominent U.S. statesman of the early 19th century, serving as a U.S. Senator, Secretary of the Navy, and the tenth Governor of New Jersey.
