First edition. Large octavo, pp., x, [2], 364. Complete with all 32 photographic plates, including frontispiece and a full-page map to p. 335. Bound in sky blue cloth with navy blue titles to spine. Cloth slightly faded to spine, some mild scattered foxing to endpapers and text-block edges. Neat, tight, square, and clean and free from annotations or inscriptions. A very good copy. Scarce first edition of this groundbreaking work on the coasts of Saudi Arabia by the founding father of Arab-American literature Ameen Rihani. Around the Coasts of Arabia describes Rihani's time with King Husein in the Hijaz, the Idrisi in Asir, Aal Sabah, the sheiks of Kuwait, Aal Kalifah, the sheiks of Bahrein, and Aden and the protectorates and undermines the preceding problematic Orientalist accounts, instead offering one of the first analytical descriptions of Arabia from an Arab perspective.
