The Fall 1989 issue of Asian Art (Vol. II, No. 4), the quarterly journal published by the Sackler Gallery of the Smithsonian. This issue is devoted almost entirely to Raghubir Singh, with: an essay and a 26-page portfolio of work by Singh; an essay about the photographer by Max Kozloff who also conducted a separate interview with Singh; the only non-Singh related article is by James Wescoat about life in a Mughal garden. SIGNED BY KOZLOFF on the table of contents page; no inscription. Perfect-bound, stiff wraps; 79 pages; color plates throughout + maps; 8.5 x 11 inches. Singh (1942–1999) was a self-taught Indian photographer, best known for his documentary-style, small-format street photography of the people of India. He was influenced by Henri Cartier-Bresson, whom he met in 1966, and Robert Frank, but unlike them, he chose to work in color--color being intrinsic to Indian aesthetics.…
