A propos de cet article

1st Printing. 277 pages. Special Edition of the author's novel. N.V. M. Gonzalez's greatest achievement. The First Leatherette-Board Hardcover Edition. Published in 1959 in a one-time-only print run by the author's Philippine publisher. Precedes and should not be confused with the Alan Swallow Denver Press 1961 Edition. There is no ISBN for either edition. Both editions are now very rare. Presents, in its elegant leatherette-board hardcover collectible format, Nestor Vicente Madali's "The Bamboo Dancers". Despite its imperfections, this is his most accomplished and most "contemporary" novel. "A nimble cosmopolitan tale, as urgent as the morning's headlines - and as sinister. The pages, nervous with incident, offer shock after shock of recognition. Tomorrow's Filipinos may walk the land more firmly than we do now; and Gonzalez's novel should gain in importance as a record of the days when our people nimbly danced to the clash of cultures" (Philippines Free Press). "The most significant novel to come out of Asia in the Post-War Period" (Leonard Casper). The narrative moves briskly, almost breathlessly in New York, Vermont, Tokyo, Hiroshima, Taipei, and Manila. The title refers to the legendarily treacherous "tinikling" folk dance, a physically demanding, spectacular performance in which the dancers must hop in and out between two bamboo poles clapped together rhythmically. They can never miss a beat, which becomes faster then fastest as the dance progresses, because if they do, their feet will be caught by the poles, be badly hurt, even damaged. This performance symbolically, brilliantly, and vividly represents the treachery and danger facing Filipinos (and every human being, for that matter) who must learn to navigate a ruthless world in which they do not quite belong At Home or Abroad, despite their determination and sacrifices. Homosexuality, so daring for its time, is not mentioned by his publishers, and never discussed in literary studies of the time, with the notable exception of Miguel Bernad, the late great Filipino Renaissance Man. He was the only literary critic we know of to lay bare the ambivalent yet unmistakable, unconsummated yet deeply felt homosexual attraction and "negotiation" between the seductive Filipino-American protagonist and his Hollywood-handsome American adventurer-friend (who comes to a terrible end in Asia). Homosexuality is surely the ultimate "bamboo dance" performance that N.V. M. Gonzalez presciently and masterfully depicts in his novel. An absolute "must-have" title for N.V. M. Gonzalez collectors. This title is a great book. As far as we know, this is the only copy of the Leatherette-Board Hardcover First Edition/First Printing (Benipayo Press) available online and despite its imperfection (browning and waving of pages because of inferior paper used, but it's there) is still in fine condition overall. A rare copy thus. Honored as Philippine National Artist in 1997. One of the greatest Filipino writers of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy.
