CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: Originally a Lieutenant in Battery A, Rhode Island Light Artillery, formed earlier, Monroe was promoted Captain and organized and took command of Battery D September 4, 1861 for a three year enlistment. During the Antietam campaign he commanded this well regarded battery, and the combined battalion of batteries of the Divisional Artillery, First Division of First Army Corps as the senior officer present. He writes: There was considerable speculation among the men of the battery as to our execution upon the batteries opposed to us the morning and evening of the day previous, so some of them asked leave to go over to the position those batteries had occupied to see what had been the result of our fire upon them. On their return they reported that the effect of our shot had been all that was intended, for the ground was strewn with dead horses, and that a number of dead artillerymen were lying there.REFERENCE: DORN RI 28.…
