A propos de cet article

Folio folding portfolio (18¾ x 14¼" / 48 x 37 cm) with quarter brown cloth over tan lettered boards (faded & spotted) plus cloth tassels, containing: University of Chicago Oriental Institute Nubia Expedition Volume I reddish monograph in wrappers by Herbert Ricke et associates; illustrated with 49 folio plates including portraits, 6 schematic plans, and glossy B&W photographs with some in color; 6 plans, xvii + 39 pages. Weight > 7 lbs. The Temple of Beit el-Wali is a rock-cut Ancient Egyptian temple in Nubia which was built by Pharaoh Ramesses II and dedicated to the deities of Amun-Re, Re-Horakhti, Khnum and Anuket. It was the first in a series of temples built by Ramesses II in this region; its name Beit el-Wali means 'House of the Holy Man' and may indicate its previous use by a Christian hermit at some point in time. In an amazing feat of salvage archaeology, the temple was cut up and relocated--then reassembled on higher ground--during the 1960s as a result of the fllooding to be caused by the Egyptian Aswan High Dam project. Overall in Good + (portfolio) to Near Fine CONDITION (wrappered UofC monograph & folio plates). Moderate wear, sun fading, discoloration, likely insect damage, and some spotting to portfolio covers and front pastedown. Internally the portfolio is without stains and has clean paper lining. The softcover reddish UofC & Oriental Institute monograph by Ricke, Huges, and Wente is Very Fine. Most folio plates are FINE (though a few have splits at their folds) and without foxing or stains. Because of weight and size extra postage may be required.…
