This book was published in conjunction with a traveling exhibition organized by the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, DC, 4 February - 26 March 1978, of a selection of images from the collection of Sam Wagstaff [1921-1987]. Wagstaffwas an American art curator, collector, and the artistic mentor and benefactor of photographer Robert Mapplethorpe and poet-punk rocker Patti Smith. Wagstaff collected critically and widely, as evidenced by the celebrated photographers included in this collection.
