281 pp, illustrated. Very good copy, with some aged glue residue visible where the frontispiece is tipped in, light foxing to top edge. Rear panel of dust jacket has some old dampstaining, otherwise jacket is very good. As described on the jacket, this book offered "a many sided portrait of Harlem, summng up most of the twentieth-century history of the urban center" of Black life in the U.S. "Writing with a full knowledge and keen appreciation of his subject,' Johnson, "chronicles the Harlem scene as it has developed from before World War I through the Black Power phase of" the 1960s.
