A propos de cet article

Fine condition black boards with gold spine lettering, contained in a near fine condition non price-clipped color photographic dust jacket. Includes Dedication; List of Maps; Preface; List of Abbreviations and Acronyms; Conclusion: Unity of Command; Notes; Bibliography; Index and About the Author. Illustrated with maps, photographs, tables and charts. "This engrossing and meticulously researched volume re-examines the decision made by Dwight D. Eisenhower and his staff in the crucial months leading up to the Battle of the Bulge. In late August 1944, triumphant Allied tank columns chased the remnants of the German Army from France; defeat of the Wehrmacht seemed assured. But on 16 December German tanks tore into the Americans in the Ardennes and made for the Meuse, beginning the counteroffensive known as the Battle of the Bulge. What had happened to cause this reversal of fortune? Received wisdom says that Eisenhower's "broad front" strategy caused his armies to stall in early September, and his subsequent failure to concentrate his forces brought about deadlock and opened the way for the German attack. Arguing to the contrary, John A. Adams demonstrates that Eisenhower and his staff at SHAEF had a good campaign strategy, refined to reflect developments on the ground, which had an excellent chance of destroying the Germans west of the Rhine. For Montgomery the issue was whether a single thrust to Berlin should occur north of the Ruhr or south in Lorraine. Key to Ike's strategy was the effort to fix the Germans west of the Rhine, destroy them, and then advance into central Germany. Because German strength would prove higher than even Eisenhower anticipated, Monty's strategy was almost certain to end in failure. Eisenhower's plan went forward, but both Montgomery and Bradley, pursuing their own agendas, disobeyed Ike's instructions, ordering alterations that were fatal to the SHAEF plan. Upon hearing that Patton's attack in the south would be allowed to continue, Montgomery changed the deployment of his army group, did not clear the approaches to Antwerp (thereby exacerbating the problems of supplying the advancing troops), and began his thrust into Germany. For his part, Bradley did not heed the specific guidance Ike gave him on the deployment of First Army, spreading it over 100 kilometers of front in an attempt to revive his American plan in Lorraine. Several attacks failed where the one Ike had outlined would likely have succeeded against the German opposition. Adams' view may be controversial, but his careful attention to the documentary evidence and closely argued strategic analysis make for an engaging reassessment of a crucial period in the battle for Western Europe." - from the inner front and rear jacket flaps.…

Description de la boutique

Vero Beach Books is an antiquarian bookseller with a constantly updated inventory of rare out-of-print books, signed books, children's books, plus a large inventory of ephemeral items such as major U.S. city newspapers going back 100 years and more, golden and silver age fine condition comic books (soon to be added), and many other ephemeral items as well as much more recent popular volumes. We have been in business for 25 years, originally known as Emerson Books (named after one of our owner's favorite authors, to wit, Ralph Waldo Emerson) located back then in Westport, Connecticut. That said, we are here to serve you, to offer you fine quality items that are conservatively described so that you will always be pleasantly surprised and delighted with your purchase. Twenty-five years in the bookselling business has borne out our stellar service oriented reputation; the only difference is that now we are located in the almost always sunny and warm climate of Vero Beach, Florida. Again, we are here to serve you and, as was the case when we were previously known on ABEBooks.com as Emerson Books, we will continue to offer our very popular 100% free search service for those hard to find books rare and out of print books. Oftentimes we are also able to obtain these rare finds at very good discounts to our customers' so it is always worth contacting us in such cases!
